Romantic Master Bedroom in 5 Easy Steps

Our master bedroom was the first room I really considered “complete” after moving into the Ravenstone house.

Step 1: Update your Fixtures

When we moved into this house, the blinds were the traditional white 3 inch wide blinds. They were heavy and time consuming to me since the first thing I do when I wake up is let in the light!

We updated the blinds to automatic blackout shades from SelectBlinds.com — I DO NOT recommend using them. Their products are good, but their service is the worst I have experienced from an online company.

More on that later.

We also updated our fan. The first week or so we were in the house, the fan rocked and squeaked with every motion.

I usually would have been more bothered but we were already up constantly with a 3 month old so I have gotten used to tuning a lot of background noise out. You know, the TV, toddlers, my husband. The basics.

Step 2: Simple really is sweeter

I wanted to be sure our master bedroom was decorated simply.

I’ve gotten into the whole “minimalist” movement and although I am quite far from ACTUALLY being a minimalist, it has helped me downsize and get rid of a lot of unwanted or unneeded decor pieces.

The only decor I have on the walls are the two pieces above my bed.

It gives a fresh and uncluttered look. I’ve found that uncluttered walls mean a less cluttered mind and leave me pretty relaxed.

Step 3: Aim for sweet and relaxing colors

You can see the majority of our room is white. White walls, white bedding and pillows, white decor…

I try to do a lot of white and neutrals with a small pop of cool colors. I love the soft purples and grays. I think they bring a romantic vibe to the room without being too overbearing.

Step 4: Add some curves

My favorite pieces in our room are our bedside tables. I searched high and low for something I thought fit the look and space. Believe it or not, I had a really hard time finding them.

I went back and forth with buying all new furniture in a lighter color, or finding something that could tie in our dressers AND our bed.

That actually created a problem in our room…

My husband doesn’t usually have too much to say when I am decorating. When he does, I have to take it to heart. It’s his house too!

He was pretty adamant on keeping these dressers. I love them but my concern was that they were not as feminine as I wanted.

That was his exact reason for keeping them in our room. They were more masculine.

This chunky low dresser with a matching tall dresser came from Furniture Source International. Their pieces are solid and handmade. Every single piece I have seen in their warehouse is GORGEOUS. The huge selling point: they’re pieces that will last a lifetime.

Side Note: Check out my hutch I just bought from them last month! I am still utterly in LOVE with that thing!

Anyway – it was a challenge when he let me know we should keep the dressers in our room. I intend on keeping these dressers forever, but in our room…? I wasn’t so sure.

A lot of times, dark colors are modern and masculine. I’ve found if it’s got curves instead of sharp angles, it will look more feminine.

When I came across these coffee tables on Wayfair, I had to have them. The curves are elegant and sweet, but the nightstand altogether is a chunky piece.

The nightstands (that are actually coffee tables) tied everything together perfectly without having a to be black.

Husband gets to keep his dressers, and I get to keep my nightstands.

Win-Win!

For a long while, I had nothing about our bed. I was going back and forth between something sweet and framed, or something big and bold.

I went with bold.

I came across these pieces at Hobby Lobby. I was super torn because it’s something I could easily make. I may remake it in the future if I can get my hands on a silhouette.

If I do remake it, you will be the first to see it!

With 3 small kids at home, working from home full time, and all of the other house projects we have going on, I decided to just buy the set. They are made of wood and stained a dark brown/black.

Step 5: Add some floral

I know a lot of people who hate floral. I actually consider it part of my old french lady side. But I am telling you

Add floral and it will sweeten things up.

Most times, people don’t even notice the floral!

My curtains are the perfect example. They are paisley curtains with an array of colors ranging from gray, to gold, to purple. There’s even some weird off-green color in there.

Floral print just adds a sweet undertone of romance. Do it. You won’t regret it. Just be careful – once you hop on that floral train, you won’t stop.
