How to chalk paint furniture

Chalk paint can seem like it’s too good to be true. It’s quick, smooth, and will transform a piece in a snap. I have used it time and time again on furniture and cabinets which is why I am reposting my DIY Chalk painted dresser post!

Original Post: September 2016

I love changing things up with my home decor.

With another little one on the way, it was time to start thinking about accumulating furniture for a second nursery.

We originally bought all dark wood furniture for Scarlette (our little girl) and expected to pass it down to the second baby assuming she was out of it.

Well our family is growing quicker than we originally thought so we will have two babies in cribs at the same time!

Wish us luck!

The dark wood furniture is going to go to our little boy in March. Scarlette doesn’t need a changing table and we have that with the dark wood.

A friend graciously gave us her kiddos’ white crib so I figure we could have Scarlette’s nursery be a little more shabby chic.

I’ll be refinishing the crib in another post :).

I wanted a buffet table that I could use as a dresser because I love the little doors on them!  I found one on craigslist that was solid wood – that was important to me since I knew I was going to refinish it.

Originally I wanted to refinish it white because that’s what I intend to do with her crib.

When I got the dresser home, I wasn’t so sure anymore.

We ended up doing a soft grey. I don’t LOVE grey nurseries so I wanted to do what I could to make it a little more neutral/farm house like.

Here is the before:

Dresser was $70 and all materials and hardware were another $50. For a custom, solid wood piece, I was all in at $120. Not {shabby} at all. Heh, you see what I did there?

I completed this entire project with a paint sample.

Believe it or not, I went to Lowes and picked up a sample of Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray. I really just wanted to test the color out. Turns out, I loved the color and mixed up my chalk paint batch right then and there.

If you don’t know how to make your own chalk paint out of ANY color, check out my tutorial here!

I did have to go back and buy one more sample and make a tiny batch to do some finishing touches but I was pumped that I didn’t have to spend more than $6 on paint!

The whole dresser got a total of two coats of chalk paint.

I removed all of the old hardware and purchased new. I wanted it to not look so…gray and modern so I purchased brushed nickel knobs.

I had to wood fill all the holes I wasn’t able to reuse- which ended up being most of them.

When the paint was dry, I took some rough grit sandpaper and distressed to my liking.

Lastly, I waxed it with Minwax dark finishing wax.

Voila! A whole new dresser.

Look at the transformation!

I dig it. The final product was exactly what I was hoping for. A sweet grey for a nursery and a solid wood piece of furniture!
