If you saw my post last week, week 1 of the One Room Challenge, you got to see what my inspiration is for my kitchen.
Y’all. Let me just say I am already worn from this project! It’s only week TWO! How!?
I will push through! If you have any words of wisdom or tips to keep me focused, COMMENT AND GIVE ME ALL THE DEETS!!
Let me tell you something:
Paint, has been the BANE of my existence. I literally tested EIGHT paint samples, along with black AND white on our island.
The good news though, is Wyatt – my one year old – found the winning color.
You now have a real life glimpse of what it’s like to do a remodel with a 4, 3, and 1 year old. It’s insane.
Back to the kitchen.
This week, we did A LOT. We worked on painting cabinets and we also got the countertops replaced! We even got some baseboards throughout the rest of the house (because we live like animals when we get moving on projects). The countertops are AMAZING.
They came from a local place here called Premier Countertop Design. These are quartz but with some veins in the quartz to look similar to marble. They’re a little dirty here – but hey, we have to cook while we reno!
Their showroom was STUNNING. I wanted to steal their gorgeous hood vent. Seriously look at it!
With the cabinets… get ready for this:
We tried to de-gloss our old cabinets and roller them by hand. Worst mistake we have made on a reno in a LONG time.
It took FIVE coats.
BY HAND.
I was pretty pleased with the amount of progress I had made.
And then it started peeling. MY HARD WORK WAS LITERALLY PEELING OFF into my hands.
Y’all see why I am feeling a little defeated?
My husband jumped in to save the day. He used a multipurpose tool to scrape the loose paint, and then an orbital sander to get the rest of the paint off along with the lacquer from it’s original finish.
I drank wine and felt sorry for myself for a little while.
And then I got back to work.

Talk about a major set back.
We will keep pushing forward though. Kitchen renovations are SO intrusive to your daily life. They are tough.
BUT they have the LARGEST payoff.
We are very happy with the layout of the kitchen, so we decided to keep the cabinets and just reface them to have a shaker style appearance. To get better understanding of the how the kitchen is situated, here is a quick pic of the layout of the main living areas:
Since we wanted to keep the cabinet bases but reface them, we purchased unfinished shaker style cabinets faces from Barker Door. This is the second time we have used them to reface a kitchen and they have the high quality doors for a reasonable price.
We ordered a new cooktop along with a new microwave almost 3 months ago and it’s been on back order, so hopefully those come before week 6!
This is the cooktop we will be getting eventually – if it ever arrives!Hey, those countertops actually look like my new ones!
The microwave is nothing fancy, but you’d better believe I am THRILLED to be getting a new one. Our current one starts and stops, and then requires a little banging to start working. We live on chicken nuggets in this house of 5. I ain’t about this noise, folks.Next week, we plan to have the backsplash and the white cabinet bases and doors done. We have already started working on the spraying and refacing!!!
This One Room Challenge is already giving me a run for my money!
Stick around to see if I can finish! Until then, go check out these fantastic projects!

It is going to be so pretty when you finish. Some how the hassles fade from memory and then you do another project. Anyway, that’s what happens to me. 😊
You are so kind! We had an unexpected death in the family shortly after I posted this so I have taken a bit of a hiatus. The projects have slowed but I hope to pick back up on them soon! Happy DIYing!! They give me a lot to look forward to!
